President’s Reception – USS Midway Naval Carrier

All Annual Meeting registrants are invited to attend the President’s Reception on board the USS Midway Museum.

7:00 – 9:00 pm, Friday, February 25

The President’s Reception is an exciting and fun-filled evening that offers the perfect opportunity to reconnect with old friends and make new connections in an atmosphere of camaraderie and exploration. The Academy of Osseointegration is looking forward to greeting you in San Diego for the return of its live, in-person Annual Meeting in 2022. Attendees will enjoy the many benefits of in-person activities, most especially at the President’s Reception – a favorite event at each year’s meeting. Please be aware that all COVID-19 safety precautions will be followed during this event.

Following the long-held Annual Meeting tradition, this time-honored event is offered at no charge to all registered attendees and guests. A goal of the Academy has been to provide our attendees the unique opportunity to experience our host city’s most notable and popular attractions together.  We appreciate the importance of shared experiences that forge stronger relationships and lasting memories, and encourage all attendees to join in the fun at this impressive maritime museum.

The USS Midway Naval Carrier will be open exclusively for attendees, guests and exhibitors.

The USS Midway will open its doors exclusively for Annual Meeting attendees so you will not want to miss the opportunity to explore this iconic and historic naval ship, the most visited retired wartime vessel in the world. Hosted by AO President Dr. Tara Aghaloo, and past presidents Drs. Clark Stanford and Jay Malmquist, free admission, ground transportation, hors d’oeuvres and cocktails will all be included during this very special three-hour evening event.

As you tour the museum, docent’s will be located throughout to assist as well as provide the unique historical background of this massive naval carrier with 18 decks, equal to a 20-story building. Located on the shores of the San Diego Bay, the USS Midway was the longest serving aircraft carrier in the 20th Century named after the climactic Battle of Midway of June 1942 and commissioned in 1945 just eight days after the end of World War II.

The evening’s festivities will begin on the USS Midway’s 1000-ft. flight deck which boasts a collection of more than 30 restored vintage propeller aircraft, helicopters and fighter jets used over the last seven decades, including the F4U Corsair, UH-1 Huey Gunship and infamous F-14 Tomcat.

During the evening, you may wish to venture below deck to explore what life was like for navy men at sea. You’ll experience how a crew of up to 300 aviators once lived and worked for months at a time. Another highlight of the museum is the command center where you’ll get a close-up view of how maritime military missions were executed and monitored.

Comfortable clothing and shoes are recommended if you wish to tour the ship as many of the passageways below deck require careful attention for safe maneuvering. The reception will be held primarily on the ship’s flight deck, weather permitting, so please dress appropriately. Shuttle buses will transport attendees and guests to and from the meeting hotels and reception venue throughout the evening.

We look forward to seeing everyone aboard the USS Midway!

Name badges must be worn for admittance.
